Microdermabrasion, also known as the Parisian Peel or the Lunchtime Peel, is a spa treatment that deep cleans the skin, removes dead skin cells and smooths out superficial surface imperfections. In spite of the name, your skin does not peel after the procedure.
The treatment is performed with a fine handheld vacuum which is passed over the skin. As the skin is being vacuumed, tiny specialized sand particles cycle within the handpiece and buff away dead skin cells. The amount of buffing, or exfoliation, is controlled by the duration of the process and the power setting of the machine.

How it works
Microdermabrasion buffs & smooths the outer layer of skin. This layer is called the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum is not removed completely. In addition to deep cleaning the skin, microdermabrasion stimulates the body to produce new skin cells and new collagen. This secondary benefit improves the tone, texture and quality of the skin. |
Does it require anesthesia?
Microdermabrasion is painless and requires no anesthesia. You will feel the suction of the handpiece on your skin which is rarely uncomfortable. If you experience any discomfort, the power setting will be lowered to your preference.
How long do the results last?
If you're new to microdermabrasion and are looking for the best possible result, we recommend that you start with six sessions. These sessions should be scheduled two weeks apart. Afterwards, you will maintain your results by scheduling one maintenance session every two to three months. If you're looking for longer lasting results, you should consider a laser peel.
Are there any restrictions after microdermabrasion?
One of the most appealing aspects of microdermabrasion is the ability to get back to your routine immediately without restrictions. You do not need to use any special creams, you do not need to stay out of the sun & you do not need to avoid any medications. In fact, many of our patients frequently combine microdermabrasion with other spa treatments.
What's the difference between salon & medspa microdermabrasion?
Medspa microdermabrasion is done with more powerful machines. This does not mean that one venue is better than the other. However, if you think you need more than a little bit of improvement, a medspa will usually have access to additional treatments such as lasers, botox, fillers and lipo fat injections. In general, the cost of microdermabrasion is usually less when it is part of a larger treatment package.
What's the difference between microdermabrasion & regular dermabrasion?
Regular dermabrasion is much more aggressive and goes much deeper into the skin than microdermabrasion. Regular dermabrasion goes deep enough to cause bleeding and it requires local anesthesia and sometimes intravenous sedation. Regular dermabrasion is done for severe or deep skin problems and has a long healing time.
Is microdermabrasion an effective treatment for acne marks?
Most acne marks are a combination of superficial and deeper scarring. Treatments such as microdermabrasion are not able to get deep enough to provide a satisfying improvement in appearance. We recommend either intense pulse light (IPL) therapy or laser peels for this condition.
Is there a minimum age for microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types but most doctors recommend it for patients aged 14 and older, mainly because they want to make sure that all major hormonal changes are over and the results of the procedure are optimal.
Does microdermabrasion work on your eyelids?
The skin of the eyelids is too thin and can easily be damaged with microdermabrasion leading to irritation or scarring.
Can I have microdermabrasion while nursing?
We recommend that you wait until you deliver your baby and finish the nursing period before treatment. Your skin is more sensitive during pregnancy and nursing and microderma tools may cause irritation or severe scarring. This procedure is also not recommended for pregnant women because hormonal changes during this period may reduce the effectiveness of the procedure.
Is microdermabrasion effective for large pores?
Micro dermabration systems stimulate collagen growth which is why it works on large pores. Collagen production is stimulated through skin exfoliation. Furthermore, the vacuum function of most micro derm abrasion machines sucks out hardened oil, dust and other dirt which may clog your pores. This way, the oil in the glands can again reach the surface of your skin and your pores can return to their natural shape and size.
